Hi Artists,
Today we have a talk by the actor Ethan Hawke on giving yourself permission to be creative. Watch it here (transcript below video).
I want to highlight this part for you:
“You have to express yourself. And to express yourself, you have to know yourself. It's actually super easy. You just have to follow your love. There is no path. There's no path till you walk it, and you have to be willing to play the fool. So don't read the book that you should read, read the book you want to read. Don't listen to the music that you used to like. Take some time to listen to some new music. Take some time to talk to somebody that you don't normally talk to. I guarantee, if you do that, you will feel foolish. That's the point. Play the fool.”
A few prompts:
Which parts of your project feel like should vs. want?
In what ways are you following your love?
How do you feel about playing the fool?
Are you willing to stretch yourself – can you do something today that feels a little foolish?
Keep going ❤️
LJT
P.S. There are still tickets available for our next online event, Creative Play Sessions.
I'm listening to Ethan for the 3rd time now...I keep getting sniffly each time. He said things I say, he definitely put into words things I've thought but not given words, and he also pulled stuff out of the ether that is exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you so much for this prompt, I so love my 100 Day Project...and now my world has been expanded to include the state of the world in 1968 via Allen Ginsberg being interviewed by William F. Buckley, Jr....wow.
This is really great. I sent it to my kids as well. Thanks for this.
