Hello, friends!
Thank you to my friend
for guiding us last week on the ins and outs of sharing our projects. I often hear from project participants that sharing is both the worst and best part of the project – can you relate?Three weeks in – let’s do a check-in.
How’s it going so far? Grab your journal or whatever you like to write in:
I’m learning…
Here’s what’s working…
And what could be working better…
I feel…
This week, I will…
Our theme this week is the critics.
The inner ones, the outer ones, the existential ones. As every visual artist knows, you can’t have light without shadows.
I saw a meme recently to the effect of, “If being hard on yourself worked, it would have worked by now.”
IF BEING HARD ON YOURSELF WORKED, IT WOULD HAVE WORKED BY NOW.
IF BEING HARD ON YOURSELF WORKED, IT WOULD HAVE WORKED BY NOW!
IF BEING HARD ON YOURSELF WORKED, IT WOULD HAVE WORKED BY NOW!
Tattoo it on my heart.
Questions for you –
Are you being hard on yourself?
Is it helping?
What helps?
Critics don’t always show up as negative self-talk (“I’m so bad at…”, “you never…”, “someone already did it, why bother?”) or disapproval. Sometimes they show up as procrastination, inaction, feeling blocked, feeling bored, perfectionism, or other more covert ways.
Like…cleaning. My house is never cleaner than when I’m avoiding something. (Anyone else??)
This week we’ll be shining a light on the inner and outer pressures that get in the way. We’ve got memes, we’ve got monsters, texts from my dad, and personal a-ha moments about brains gone wild. Being human is a trip. And your trip is different than my trip!
In service of letting go of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that hold us back…
Do you have any barriers to doing your project?
If it’s something practical like time or space, how might you make the project fit better into your life?
Have you received or felt any criticism, from yourself or others?
What’s a story about yourself or your work that you’re tired of?
XO,
Lindsay
P.S. Here’s the link to submit your work for the Day 30 Reel!
I used to be my hardest/worst critic. Then one day i felt there's no point in doing that. Rather focus on doing your project/artwork everyday and see it to the finish line. Trust me, being easy on myself helped in being disciplined, enjoy the process and also to streamline other tasks. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the check in and wise words
